The Reds are in dire need of forward reinforcements this summer after losing Luis Suarez to Barcelona and seeing his replacements, namely Mario Balotelli, fail to fill the void.
They also lost Daniel Sturridge for the majority of the 2014/15 campaign through a series of injuries, which will also see him miss the start of next season. That has led to speculation they will look to sign another forward in the summer, and Nicol says Benteke should be top of the list.
“I am very positive about Benteke,” he said.
“I wouldn’t like to play against him. The guy is a beast. He scores goals and I actually don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for the talent he has with his feet. I would be more than happy for Christian Benteke to be at Liverpool next season.”
The forward has had an impressive campaign for the London side, scoring 18 league goals in his first season in the Premier League, seeing him finish fourth in the race for the Golden Boot, just two behind Chelsea’s Diego Costa.
Nicol, though, believes Austin would represent a huge gamble for manager Brendan Rodgers.
“Charlie Austin scored so many goals for QPR, who were bottom of the league for most of the season,” he added.
“That means he has got talent. The question is, can you put the talent into Liverpool’s team? We thought when [Adam] Lallana came from Southampton, he has got ability, he has got skill, he has got a little bit of something different to other players, like Charlie has, but that hasn’t worked.”
