Lionel Messi handed award by anti-Barcelona institution

The Argentine attacker has been named as La Liga player of the year by Marca, which is traditionally in favour of Real Madrid.

Barcelona’s second half to the 2014-15 season saw the Catalan giants dominate Spanish football and win the La Liga title with a game to spare.

A key reason behind Luis Enrique’s men’s domestic triumph has been star player Lionel Messi, who has been in scintillating form since the turn of the year.

The Argentina international finished the campaign with 43 La Liga goals and 18 assists, including the only goal of the game in the decisive 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid that clinched the title for the Blaugrana.

Messi has been named as Marca’s player of the season, which is a testament to just how good the Barcelona man is.

The Spanish newspaper has traditionally shown bias to Real Madrid and as such the concession of the Argentine as having had a better season that 48-goal attacker Cristiano Ronaldo is quite the statement.

The South American star will hope to lead Barcelona to a momentous treble, with competition finals in the Copa del Rey and Champions League still to play this season.

Messi will then head to the Copa America in Chile with Argentina.
