The Dutchman has worked with the Southampton boss before, during their time at Feyenoord.
In August last year Aston Villa and Southampton came to blows over the future of Ron Vlaar. The Dutch international had just had an exceptional World Cup for The Netherlands and his countryman reportedly wanted him to head down to the South Coast.
The Independent reported former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert as stating at the time:
Vlaar stayed, had a difficult season and is still out of contract at the end of the current campaign.
His future is still in doubt but he does still have one more game to play for Aston Villa. The Dutchman is likely to start against Arsenal in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
Interestingly, that could see him deny Southampton a place in next season's Europa League.
Southampton are relying on Arsenal to beat Villa in order to make their way into Europe next term.
"I'm sorry for him. It is really Aston Villa that belongs in European football."
Villa will also hope that qualifying for the Europa League can convince Vlaar to sign on the dotted line of a new deal at Villa Park.
