Unai Emery reveals Sevilla interest in Gaston Ramirez last summer

Southampton attacking midfielder Gaston Ramirez ended up going on loan to Hull City.

Sevilla manager Unai Emery has revealed to the Guardian that he tried to sign Gaston Ramirez from Southampton last summer.

Ramirez was made available for transfer by the Saints, as they felt he was surplus to requirements, and Emery was keen to bring the attacking midfielder to La Liga.

However, Ramirez did not appear to be very interested in the move - with the Uruguayan international opting to move to Hull City instead.

“In the summer we wanted Gaston Ramírez, but he went to Hull City,” Emery said. “We can’t compete economically with Hull City. We pay less, but we compete more. It’s hard to explain that. Ramírez didn’t even reply, he ignored my calls. We had won the Europa League but he didn’t pick up the phone. I don’t know if he is playing, but now we’re in another final. Our fans love this competition.”

Ramirez may be regretting his choice of move now, as the transfer has not worked out as any of the parties involved would have been hoping for.

The 24-year-old made little impact at Hull and he was unable to save Steve Bruce's men from slipping out of the Premier League.

Ramirez made just 24 appearances for the Tigers and his displays there did not do enough, according to a report in the Daily Mail, to convince Southampton that he would be worth keeping.

Sevilla, meanwhile, have got to the Europa League final and put together a strong campaign in La Liga - meaning that a move to Spain may have been more productive for the creative midfielder.
