Report: Lee Charnley to have sole responsibility over Newcastle's next manager

St James Park

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has tasked Lee Charnley with deciding the club's next manager.

The Chronicle has reported that Lee Charnley has been give sole responsibility for deciding Newcastle United’s manager for next season.

The club’s managing director has been handed the task by the club’s owner Mike Ashley, who the paper states will not be part of the process.

The paper claims Charnley will meet with the club’s board to discuss the best way forward after the Magpies secured their Premier League safety with a win on the final day of the season last weekend.

John Carver would appear to be the obvious favourite considering he guided the team to safety after Alan Pardew decided to move on and link up with Crystal Palace.

Steve McClaren is also an obvious choice considering he’s just been sacked by Derby County and has no ties if the club wants to approach him over the position.

Hopefully Charnley can reach a recommendation quickly, which will allow the club to move forward and give the man coming in plenty of time to make changes over the summer and for those changes to become effective before the competitive actions returns.
