Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained on talkSPORT why Hugo Lloris is so important to his old club.
Lloris is currently Tottenham’s number one, but they face a real struggle to hang onto him for next season, if a club playing in the Champions League decides to target him as a possible new signing.
“I like Lloris, I really like him – He’s not afraid to come off of his line, he takes chances but they’re educated chances. You want your goalkeeper to help you out when balls come into the box – You underestimate how much a goalkeeper uses his feet during a game and Lloris is one of the best,” said Robinson.
One of the main benefits Lloris creates for Tottenham is that his aggressive style as a goalkeeper allows the defence to adopt a much higher line.
That in turn allows the midfield and the attack to press hard, which gives Tottenham a greater chance of being able to maintain pressure over their opposition.
It’s also important to point out that Lloris is experienced and skilled as a leader in the side and in a good position as the goalkeeper.
He can see things developing in front of him and can organise the defence to deal with where he sees the danger coming towards Tottenham’s goal.
He does have a desire to play in the Champions League so there is always going to be that little bit of extra pressure on the team to break into that competition.
However, he’s a very level headed individual and could realise the obvious benefits of staying at Tottenham for several years.
