Queens Park Rangers have released the midfielder - and he was previously linked with Leeds.
The 32-year-old has previously expressed his wish to play for Leeds and the Daily Star recently linked him with a move while Neil Redfearn was in charge.
Redfearn is now gone but fans on Twitter appear to want the experienced midfielder at Elland Road nevertheless.
As for QPR, meanwhile, there has been mixed reaction on social media to his release from the west London club. But the majority of supporters do appear to feel it was the right time for Barton to leave the R's...
Would like to have seen Barton and Zamora for another year tbh. Bold statement from us though. #QPR— Patrick Mackinney (@_Mackinney) May 27, 2015
So Joey Barton has been released....good riddance you maverik. #QPR— Steve (@sjthomas_) May 27, 2015
Can't argue with the players we've released. Thank you to Bobby Z for a memory of a lifetime and Barton/Dunne for their efforts. #QPR— Harry Oakley (@HOakley7) May 27, 2015
Getting rid of Barton is the right move but only if we get a decent younger replacement in. On his day he was one of our better players #QPR— Alex (@alexs95_) May 27, 2015
In terms of Barton's next destination, bookmakers have linked him with a number of sides - including his former club Newcastle United and newly promoted Watford.
But, with reports previously suggesting the ex-QPR man could join Leeds, there has naturally been plenty of attention to his release on Twitter from Whites fans.
Obviously, Barton comes with controversy. But he will also offer a no-nonsense, tough-tackling approach that - while looking out of place in the Premier League - could be just what United need in the Championship.
Here's how Leeds fans took the news of his release...
Would defo take Joey Barton on a free for next season! #lufc— RichardLufc (@RichardLuFc) May 27, 2015
Hope they televise the Barton/Cellino contract talks if they happen. What a meeting of minds. #LUFC— Gareth Williamson (@gdwilliamson79) May 27, 2015
Controversial tweet of the week. I would rather #lufc sign Joey Barton than Jermaine Beckford. Just what we need in midfield.— Stephen Clark (@clarkyboy72) May 27, 2015
