Jamie Redknapp slates Tottenham star Erik Lamela, rates his season as 4/10

Pundit Jamie Redknapp says Tottenham Hotspur star Erik Lamela has disappointed him.

Jamie Redknapp has written off Erik Lamela's second season at Tottenham as a failure.

The former midfielder turned pundit had tipped the winger as one of his 10 players to watch at the start of the campaign, in The Mail.

Revisiting the selection with the season now over, Redknapp gave Lamela the lowest rating of any of the players he selected, barring his refusal to grade Rio Ferdinand's spell at QPR due to his recent off-field hearbreak with the death of his wife.

Redknapp said, regarding Lamela: "4/10. The mark says it all. Poor."

Back in August, the pundit had high hopes for the Argentine, telling The Mail then: "You may consider him an odd choice, but the Spurs player who endured a terrible opening season in English football, is a wonderful talent.

"He cost £30m and you have to ask how Franco Baldini, Spurs’ director of football, believed him to be worth that. But with a fellow Argentine as his new manager, we could see him emerge."

Lamela has been very inconsistent, and has gone missing at times in big games for Tottenham, but his season has seen him provide seven assists for the club in the league, outperforming Chelsea's Willian for instance.

The winger has largely stayed fit for Spurs too, barring a few weeks out in January, with injuries a big problem for him in his debut season, playing only nine times.

He has improved his level of performance in every category above, from passing accuracy, crossing accuracy, chances created per game, to successful dribbles per game.

Given his lack of football in his first season, this campaign has almost been a debut year for him, playing under a new coach and playing at several away grounds for the first time.

Next season he will need to continue improving, but a 4/10 rating from Redknapp is overly harsh.
