Iwan Roberts: Arsenal won't win the league with Ospina as their number one

Former Wales international and Norwich City player Iwan Roberts feels Arsene Wenger needs to make a statement with a new goalkeeper for Arsenal.

Former Wales international Iwan Roberts suggested when he appeared as a guest on talkSPORT that he doesn’t feel Arsenal can win the league with David Ospina as the club’s number one.

ESPN has reported that Arsenal remain one of the clubs linked with a move to sign Petr Cech from Chelsea, but the decent job Ospina has done for the Gunners between the sticks may sway him to take a more relaxed approach over signing a new goalkeeper.

However, it’s a position Roberts feels the Gunners need to address if they are to push on and compete for league glory.

“I just feel that with Ospina as their number one, they aren’t going to get near the Premier League title,” he said.

Having a solid and consistent goalkeeper is vital for any of the top sides with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur two examples of sides that could be in lower positions were it not for the heroics of David De Gea and Hugo Lloris respectively.

Arsenal certainly have the resources to go after fresh options in any position but whether Arsene Wenger will be persuaded to add another goalkeeper to the squad remains to be seen.

Wenger is a manager who has always maintained that he won’t make new signings for the sake of doing so and he could settle with Ospina as first choice in his position if a deal for Cech becomes too difficult for the Gunners to achieve.

If a deal for Cech is there, he is a player who could make Arsenal much stronger as Wenger searches for another title before he retires.
