Harry Winks has been selected to feature for Tottenham during their post-season tour.
Speaking to the official Spurs website, Winks commented on his inclusion in Tottenham’s squad for their tour of Malaysia, having broken into the first-team set-up this term.
The young midfielder said: “I’m honoured to be selected and to get the opportunity to travel with the team. As far as the matches go, I’ll be looking to try to get myself in and around the squad and hopefully I may get an opportunity in one of the games, but for me personally it’s a great honour and achievement just to be selected to go on the tour.”
Winks, who made his first-team debut in the Europa League last November, is seen as one of the brightest talents in the Spurs academy. Along with Josh Onomah, the talented young duo have both been invited to the post-season tour, and are expected to feature heavily in the absence of more senior players.
Under Mauricio Pochettino, it is expected that the duo will start to properly break through into the first-team set-up in the coming years, and it is clearly a show of faith from Pochettino to include the 19-year-old midfielder in his travelling party.
The quality of football is sure to be far lower than that seen in the Premier League, but that will not stop Winks developing as a player due to his inclusion. He should win some consistent playing time, and that should truly stand him in good stead ahead of the start of next season.
Winks still has a long way to go before becoming a first-team regular for Spurs, but Pochettino has proven that he is willing to look towards youth players if necessary. The Argentine coach could be the perfect man to get the best out of the English youth international, and this tour could be the start of Winks’s proper career as a senior professional.
