Former England under-21 star Trippier should snub Tottenham for Liverpool

Burnley's Kieran Trippier has been linked to Tottenham and Liverpool, are the Reds his best bet for playing time?

Liverpool and Tottenham are vying for the services of Burnley full-back Kieran Trippier, The Mail reported earlier this week.

The paper reported that the former England under-21 international has a £3.5 million release clause in his contract, with Spurs considered to be ahead in the race to sign him.

Both clubs would represent a step up at a key stage of the 24-year-old right-back's career, and Trippier needs to make the right move.

What he won't want is for his individually impressive performances for Burnley to be undone and his development set back by spending a season on the bench.

That is a possibility at either club, but it is for this reason the former Manchester City academy star should push for a move to Liverpool rather than Tottenham given the choice.

At Spurs he would have to beat out competition from England international Kyle Walker, whose form has been patchy, but is still a favourite of head coach Mauricio Pochettino, and Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson.

There is further competition from Eric Dier, and DeAndre Yedlin, although the latter could be loaned out for the season. Yedlin may not be in the mix next season if that happens, but long-term could become an obstacle to him.

The Liverpool situation is less certain. Glen Johnson is departing on a free transfer, and Javier Manquillo is far from certain to stay beyond his loan deal. Jon Flanagan missed the entire season through injury, and is equally adept at left-back. Andre Wisdom signed a new deal yesterday at the club, but after failing to hold down a place at West Brom, he is not a player Trippier should fear regarding his spot.

Brendan Rodgers may also consider moving away from his three at the back model after they shipped nine goals in two games to Crystal Palace and Stoke City, and bringing in Trippier could be the first step in this.
