One of Tottenham Hotspur's midfielders deserves more minutes on the field according to some of their fans.
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele got a chance to show what he can do from the beginning of a match when he was named in the starting line-up against Everton on Sunday.
The Belgian international appeared 26 times in the Premier League this season, but he did not start any of Tottenham’s previous eight matches, used instead as a late substitute if at all.
Against the Toffees, the 27-year-old had a fine game – until he was replaced by Benjamin Stambouli with less than an hour played.
In his 53 minutes on the pitch, Dembele had a passing accuracy of 93 per cent, he was dispossessed just once and he won seven duels. He also set up two goal-scoring chances for a teammate and all in all, he proved he should start more matches under Mauricio Pochettino.
After the game we had plenty of comments about Dembele’s latest performance and the way his manager has used him recently.
Below you can find a selection of what Tottenham fans had to say:
PK said: ‘Thought he was excellent. I really rate him. He's one of the few Spurs players who can , with just a feign and the drop of a shoulder turn and leave two or more players behind creating time and space to turn defence into attack. How Lamela, Paulinho and Townsend are chosen over Dembele baffles me.’
Doug Batterson said: ‘I think he is very under-rated. He has skill, size and brains. Very defensive minded. Just wish he would shoot more. From what I gather, he was an attacker years ago before Fulham. Come on next season. Coys’
Iruletheworldnow said: ‘He's underrated like Sigurdsson was. Chiriches is another one who's underrated.’
Rospur said: ‘Absolutely baffling how he isn't a regular; we just look so much more comfortable in possession when he plays and much more solid in defence. He is frustrating as he seems to have the potential to do so much more going forward but he's still worth his place for his other attributes.’
Jakob Goffe said: ‘Love Dembele. I'm thinking the problem with Moussa (for MoPo) is that he always looks so calm, also while defending. What Mauricio needs to realise is that he has all the qualities needed to play our high-pressing game. He just doesn't look as lively and energetic as Mason.’
Spurserker said: ‘The best we played all year was around January when Dembele was playing number 10. If we let him go this summer we are moving on a special player and one of the very few with big game presence. His skill on the ball and accurate passing in the number 10 role creates real headaches for even top defenders. Please don’t sell him Poch...’
