Former England forward Michael Owen has questioned Derby County's decision to sack Steve McClaren.

Former England striker Michael Owen revealed on Sportlobster that he was surprised Derby County took the decision to sack Steve McClaren.

The Guardian is among the sources to have confirmed the news that McClaren is now out of work and looking for a new job, but Owen doesn’t feel he’ll be unemployed for very long.

“I'm surprised Derby have sacked Steve McClaren. I doubt he will be out of work long,” posted the ex-Liverpool striker.

It will be interesting to see where Derby go from here and where McClaren decides he should focus his efforts in terms of looking for a new job.

Derby’s aim is getting promoted into the Premier League next season, which won’t be easy in a very competitive Championship.

Hopefully the Rams can get into a position where they can consolidate in the top two rather than allowing a slide in form to develop as was the case last year.

As for McClaren, the world is his oyster and he’ll most likely be offered several jobs over the next couple of weeks.

He seemed to have a clear desire to take Derby into the Premier League, which he will feel is his ultimate level to coach at.

West Ham are looking for a new boss and Newcastle United is also an option and it will be interesting to see if either move for him.
