Theo Walcott's impressive hat-trick for Arsenal at the weekend has the potential to change his perspective heading into this summer.
The forward had struggled since returning from injury, but is coming into form at the right time with the FA Cup Final on the horizon, and having forced an equaliser against Manchester United as a substitute a week earlier.
Prior to this, Walcott had been discussed as a potential makeweight in a speculative deal to bring Liverpool contract rebel Raheem Sterling to Arsenal.
The Express had reported Liverpool and Arsenal were both contemplating a player plus cash deal involving Walcott for Sterling, while ex-Gunner Paul Merson told SkySports if Arsenal were able to get Sterling and offload Walcott it would be the 'deal of the century'.
Sterling is seen as an up and coming prospect with a higher ceiling than Walcott, but one who could fade, while the Arsenal star is approaching his peak now and is a better all round player at present.
Opinions differ on who would be getting the better player in such a scenario, with BBC pundit Robbie Savage using his Twitter page at the weekend to say he would have Walcott ahead of Sterling 'all day long'.
Walcott has just one year remaining on his deal at Arsenal, his contract expiring 12 months ahead of Sterling. The fact he has not been in Arsene Wenger's first team plans the Gunners is suspected to be behind it getting to this point, but after his hat-trick against West Brom, Arsene Wenger told ESPN he wanted to keep the England international.
On the same day Liverpool were getting beaten 6-1 at Stoke City, and may have seen their chances of persuading Walcott to join them disappear by virtue of his hat-trick for Arsenal, reminding the club of his importance.
Fans of the Reds were still optimistic about signing him however, and reacting on Twitter talked up the Arsenal star as a more reliable and attractive option than Sterling. Here is a look at the comments...
Walcott is a striker...he can't play wide he's a goalscorer..similar to micheal owen..I'd take a gamble on him this summer as a back up #LFC— brian deazley (@briandeaz) May 24, 2015
