Vertonghen has not been impressed with Tottenham’s defensive work this season.
Speaking to the official Spurs website, Belgian international defender Vertonghen highlighted the need to work on improving the clean sheet tally ahead of next season.
The 28-year-old said: “We’ve not had enough clean sheets this season and it’s a point we need to work on.”
A poor defence was the real problem with Tottenham this season, as although they were the fifth highest scorers in the top flight - largely thanks to the exploits of Harry Kane - they also conceded the fifth highest number of goals - letting in more than two of the relegated sides.
There have been personnel issues in the back-line, and there is a sense that without Lloris in goal, the North London club would have finished much further down the table than they did.
Vertonghen has hardly been his usual self this term, although he is not exactly known as an infallible defensive unit, whilst the likes of Federico Fazio and Vlad Chiriches have not lived up to their reputations as hard tackling defenders.
It is expected that head coach Mauricio Pochettino will work on improving his defence first and foremost this summer, as, until Spurs start to shut out opponents on a more regular occasion, they have no hope in challenging for the top four places.
