Southampton defender Jose Fonte has told the club's official website that this season has been slightly disappointing.
The centre-back says that he is frustrated that they were not able to break into the top-six, with Southampton now relying on Arsenal to beat Aston Villa in the FA Cup final if they are to get into Europe.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t get it automatically, I’m disappointed in that, so I feel like if it has to happen it will happen," Fonte said. "It’s not in our hands, that’s why it’s disappointing for me. I would prefer to be fifth or be sixth. We had it in our hands and we didn’t do it, so now we have to wait for the Arsenal game and hope that luck is on our side.”
Arsenal are the favourites to beat Villa on Saturday, so Southampton still have a good chance of making it into Europe, which will be just reward for the fine season that they have had.
The Saints have been competing in the upper echelons of the table throughout the 2014/15 campaign, but their lack of depth ultimately cost them a top-six finish.
Southampton started the season very impressively, but their form tailed off towards the end and they were unable to finish as strongly as they would have hoped.
Southampton can still consider this campaign to have been a success, though, and they will be hoping to push on even further up the top-flight table next year.
