talkSPORT was among the sources to confirm the news that Derby County had decided to move on from having Steve McClaren as their manager, as they seek promotion into the Premier League over the course of next season.
McClaren drove the Rams close to going up but he wasn’t able to push the side into the top flight with play-off final defeat against QPR and the club missing out on the top six over their last two seasons.
Time will tell whether the Rams have made the right decision but they will now start a search for their new boss, who will have some very big decisions to make over the course of the summer in the build up to the new season.
The new boss has to quickly work out where he wants to improve the squad and the best way to take the side forward, as the club looks to get into a position where automatic promotion is a possibility.
A top two finish removes the lottery of the play-offs and is certainly something that a club of Derby’s size and stature should certainly be aiming for over the course of the next 12 months.
The new boss will also have to quickly identify the deadwood in the squad, which will help free up some space in terms of wages and give players leaving the best possible chance of finding another club quickly ahead of an important pre-season campaign for all parties concerned.
McClaren will be fine because he has the experience and quality to secure himself a very high profile and long term job in the near future with West Ham United, Newcastle United and Sunderland examples of Premier League clubs who could make moves for him.
Here’s what Derby fans made of the news on Twitter.
Unsure of the real reason why Steve McClaren has been sacked, also time will tell if it's a good move or not.... A big thanks to Mac #dcfc— Paul Heappey (@pauleapo) May 25, 2015
Hope we can move forward and build on what McClaren started. Done a good job just a shame how it's ended. #dcfc— Jack Reynolds (@JackRey14) May 25, 2015
Although he did a fair amount of good for us earlier on, McClaren going will hopefully allow us to move on from these last few months #dcfc— Dominic Penna (@DominicPenna) May 25, 2015
Bad move sacking McClaren— Mike (@Mikebird95) May 25, 2015
Steve McClaren should be applauded for the work he did at Derby. Unfortunately the issues of the last few months have cost him. #dcfcfans— Owen Bradley (@OwenBradley) May 25, 2015
Interesting if Paul Clement takes over at Derby County, always said he should be next England manager, brilliant coach.— Neil (@spuddy1878) May 25, 2015
