The Holy Grail of the Champions League is what Tottenham are aiming for and they came close last season, finishing fifth just behind Manchester United but ahead of Liverpool in the table.
“It means a lot. We worked hard to get fourth all season, but we didn’t get it, but we can see how close we are and hopefully next season we can learn the lessons we’ve had this season – We have to keep going next season,” said Bentaleb.
A number of things need to happen over the summer in order for Tottenham to move closer to the top four next year.
They’re not too far off as things stand but manager Mauricio Pochettino needs to refine the squad slightly to ensure that he’s got good strength in depth in all key positions across his squad.
Harry Kane is a good example of a player who has been under immense pressure over the past ten months, arguably overplayed because of the lack of good attacking options to back him up in the squad.
Players also need to leave who have proven to be below the standards that Tottenham expect as they look to drive forward and towards success.
Other than the movement of players, the boss also has to work hard in terms of his tactics and improving the club’s consistency against some of their lower profile Premier League opponents.
The defence needs to keep more clean sheets, the boss needs to inject more width into midfield and support is needed for Kane up top. Tick all of those boxes and Tottenham will look in good shape.
