The Spanish side are keen to strengthen their midfield this summer.
Undoubtedly one of their most consistent and highly rated performers of the 2014-15 season in the Premier League, central midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has enjoyed an exceptional campaign individually.
Inevitably, this has lead to plenty of speculation that the £25 million rated player will be leaving St. Mary's this summer, with Arsenal and Chelsea amongst the favourites to secure his signature.
The French international said: "I think my decision is made. If I leave Southampton, it will be for a club that plays at a better level than the Europa League."
"The Champions League is my aim and if I leave Southampton, it will be for a club in the Champions League."
Schneiderlin also commented: "The goal is to stay in England. I know the league and it's a lot of fun."
However, that desire to remain in the Premier League could be tested this summer, with reports in Spanish online sports outlet, El Gol Digital, revealing that La Liga side Atletico Madrid are also weighing up a move.
Importantly, Diego Simeone's side can offer Schneiderlin the Champions League football he craves, but there's another factor which could come into play, which would be a tempting proposal for his current club.
Atletico defender Toby Alderweireld has spent a successful season on loan with The Saints, who are keen to make his move permanent. As such, the Spanish side are set to offer a favourable deal for him, as leverage towards landing Schneiderlin.
It is currently believed therefore, that Atletico will make the most of negotiations over Alderweireld, to open the door for talks with Scheiderlin, to see if he would be favourable to the idea of heading to the Vicente Calderon.
If Simeone can convince Schneiderlin of a move to La Liga being in his best interests, Southampton would benefit from getting Alderweireld, plus a sizeable fee and bonus options, in return for the Frenchman heading the opposite way.
Alderweireld has enjoyed his season with Southampton, who are very keen to see him return, but his future is not yet entirely clear, amidst options of fighting for a place with Atletico, or pondering reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
