Speaking to the Mirror, Newcastle legend Keegan suggested that Mike Ashley needs to surround himself with football-minded people ahead of next season, so he can understand how to properly run a football club.
Keegan said: “He’s got to run it differently. He's got to learn how to run a football club properly and surround himself with people who know what it's all about. I don't get it with the way the club have been thinking.”
Keegan certainly highlights a big issue with Newcastle under Ashley, but one that does not look as if it would change in the coming years.
Ashley is focused upon running the Magpies as a business, rather than a football club, and that means the financial benefits outweigh any success on the field of play.
Due to the money in the Premier League, retaining top flight status is imperative to the club, but there is no need to push for the higher positions or cup success, as they remain finically secure.
This is the reason that relegation could actually have worked in Newcastle’s favour, from a footballing standpoint.
Ashley would have seen the financial drain, and maybe would have pulled out his support during a campaign in the Championship. In that situation, they would have been able to rebuild over a few seasons, before pushing for the Premier League once again.
Keegan is keen to see Ashley understand the football side of the game, and view that as more important than the business side, and hiring football-minded people could be the only way to fix the current issues at St James’ Park.
