The 22-year-old goalkeeper made his Premier League debut as Tim Sherwood's side suffered a 1-0 final-day defeat.
Aston Villa ended their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 home defeat to relegated Burnley on Sunday afternoon after failing to find a reply to Danny Ings’ early goal.
The striker, who is set to leave Turf Moor this summer, rose above Ron Vlaar to head in Ashley Barnes’ cross after just six minutes for his 11th strike of the season, as Sean Dyche’s men would go on to frustrate the hosts for the rest of the game with their stubborn defence.
Villa boss Tim Sherwood had named a strong line-up for the match in an effort to build some momentum ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup final against Arsenal, with the lone surprise being the appearance of Jed Steer in goal.
The 22-year-old stopper joined Villa from Norwich City in the summer of 2013 but had made only three cup appearances before the Clarets clash, having taken in loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Yeovil Town earlier this season.
A groin injury to Shay Given saw Sherwood elect to give the former England youth international his top-flight debut, however, as he made up for a nervous start with a fine second-half save to prevent George Boyd from doubling the visitors' lead.
Nevertheless, opinion on his performance among Villa’s Twitter-based supporters was somewhat mixed.

Congrats to @JedSteer on his debut today, good performance, two cracking young goalkeepers on show today with Tom Heaton for Burnley— Christian Mason (@ChrismAVFC) May 24, 2015
Thought Jed Steer looked very comfortable at PL level, without having an awful lot to do. Another off the #ncfc keeper production line— Dan O'Hagan (@danohagan) May 24, 2015
Suprised to see @JedSteer in the sticks today but the lad done alright— Simon Osborn (@Ossie12Simon) May 24, 2015
Interesting to see Jed Steer making his first ever league start today for #avfc. Didn't look up to Premier League standard to me.— Khizar Jamil (@khizzy) May 24, 2015
