The Newcastle United winger scored the second goal in a 2-0 win for Newcastle United.
Newcastle United are safe from relegation for another year, after an excellent win over West Ham United condemned Hull City to relegation this afternoon.
It was a miracle-completing game for Newcastle winger Jonas Gutierrez.
The Argentine scored the second goal, after assisting the first, a sensational turnaround from the player who battled testicular cancer.
He is also out of contract in the summer and this might just be his final appearance for the club.
So a reaction was certainly expected. Jonas went berserk. He tore his shirt off and celebrated passionately around the ground.
However, he took his shirt off. That means a yellow card due to the stupid rules the referees have to follow in the modern game.
But on this occasion, given the importance and emotion of the moment, surely common sense would dictate that the referee in this case, Europa League final official Martin Atkinson, could have left the card in his pocket.
And even the official Twitter account of the team he was facing felt it was a harsh decision...
86: Yellow card for Jonas for taking off his shirt in celebration. You can't really blame him, can you? [2-0] #NEWWHU— West Ham United FC (@whufc_official) May 24, 2015
Jonas won't mind, he will just be pleased to have helped his beloved Newcastle survive the drop from the Premier League.
