Tottenham fans rip into Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers on Twitter

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has emulated Tottenham Hotspur, despite his protestations his side would not.

Liverpool's humiliating defeat away to Stoke City on the final day of the Premier League season saw them slip behind Tottenham Hotspur in the table.

Tottenham's fifth place finish was an improvement of one on their finish last year, while Liverpool have regressed from second to sixth.

Liverpool have seriously missed last season's star player Luis Suarez, who was sold to Barcelona last summer, and been hampered by injuries to Daniel Sturridge. No striker in the squad has reached double figures.

A regression was expected by many, even if not this severe, and despite their heavy investment in players. Last summer Liverpool spent the Luis Suarez money on Mario Balotelli, Lazar Markovic, Emre Can, Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, and Rickie Lambert.

Of those only Emre Can has impressed. It is remarkably similar to Tottenham's struggles 12 months earlier to get the players to perform who were bought with the money gained from selling Gareth Bale. Only Christian Eriksen, and this season Nacer Chadli, have done well.

The big problem for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, was that he confidently stated the Reds would not befall the same fate as the North London side.

He said last summer, as reported by Eurosport: "Look at Tottenham. If you spend more than £100 million, you expect to be challenging for the league."

Liverpool have never looked like mounting a title challenge this season, despite doing so the previous year.

After finishing above the Reds, Tottenham fans have taken great delight in doing so at Brendan Rodgers' expense, with the boss admitting, reported by The Guardian, that the club's owners could fire him.
