Report: Villa face competition from Southampton for Austin, with Sherwood also considering Vardy

Aston Villa have been linked with not one but two of England's new strikers.

Aston Villa and Southampton are both interested in Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, according to the Daily Mirror.

Villa are reportedly interested in the 25-year-old QPR forward in case Christian Benteke leaves the club. Southampton, however, are said to be readying a £10 million bid for the west London side's top goalscorer - money that will come from a potential sale of Morgan Schneiderlin.

Aston Villa, then, will not be alone in chasing QPR's star man this summer, if reports are to be believed.

Tim Sherwood's solution? Well, the Mirror has also linked Villa with Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy.

Vardy, who has been far from prolific this season, was recently called up to the England squad for the first time - just like Austin - and Sherwood is said to be a fan.

Leicester would be willing to accept a £15m bid for Vardy, say the Mirror, which seems a strangely high valuation for a forward with only four Premier League goals this term.

Still, Aston Villa may well see the Leicester man as an alternative to Austin if the QPR man is snapped up by Southampton (or anyone else).
