Report: Benitez almost became West Ham boss, club will now re-approach Klopp

There's plenty going on in West Ham's search for a new manager...

Some disappointing news regarding West Ham United's hunt for a new manager is perhaps a sign of how far the club have come...

Indeed, Rafael Benitez has reportedly turned the Hammers down in favour of a move to... Real Madrid, according to the Daily Mail.

There's consolation for the east London side, then, in the fact it's taken a club that has won the European Cup no less than 10 times to prise their managerial target away.

It remains a blow nevertheless, of course, with the Mail suggesting Benitez was on the verge of taking over at West Ham, being impressed by their 'ambition.'

It is claimed he will now instead replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, taking the Irons back to square one.

Their response will be to re-approach Jurgen Klopp, although the Mail do not rate their chances of luring the former Borussia Dortmund boss to Upton Park highly.

Of the 'available' coaches, Slaven Bilic is said to be the leading contender.

And a move for the former West Ham defender may make more sense than most. But what appears clear from this report, among many others, is that there seems to be no way back at all for Sam Allardyce.

The same, however, can now be said for Benitez.
