Manchester United need to strengthen so they can cover for the absence of Michael Carrick according to their manager.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he wants to sign a deep-lying midfielder this summer.

In comments published on United’s official website, van Gaal gave the following answer when asked if that is one of his priorities during the close-season: “Number 6 is a key player, yes. I have more key roles; the number 6 is just one of those key roles.

“You have seen this season, for example, because Michael Carrick is injured and I don’t have another, I have to play with Ander Herrera there.”

While the Spaniard has impressed he is far more effective further up the field and with the right players in behind him he is a regular goal-scoring threat who could become the club’s creative catalyst next season and beyond.

So while the signing of Memphis Depay is in the bag nice and early, it seems that is only the start of United’s summer business, with van Gaal clearly keen to add another quality deep-lying midfielder to his roster to ensure any future loss of Carrick is not so sorely felt.

There are plenty of players out there, but they will not come cheap if at all, and United will have to pay big-money to sign them.
