If he stays, Dario Del Fabro could be Leeds United's breakout star next season

Taking a closer look at how a young defender could finally get the chance to show how good he is at Leeds United under Uwe Rosler.

In a recent interview with Italian radio station Radiolina later published by Cagliari News 24, Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino had some interesting things to say about young centre-back Dario Del Fabro.

While the 20-year-old made only one appearance for Leeds this season, the loanee was tipped to have a big future in the game by his countryman, who hinted that he may yet have a big future at Elland Road.

“Del Fabro?” Cellino said. “He behaved very well, he is a great guy. For me he has great potential, but we need to see if he can become a player.”

Following recent speculation from Sport Italia that Leeds could turn Del Fabro’s loan move into a permanent deal, the young Italian could have a very big campaign ahead of him. And in truth he could actually be the Championship club’s breakout star next year.

Although he was barely seen last season, his performance in the FA Cup against Sunderland showed just what he is capable of.

A calm, composed performance against top flight opposition showed Del Fabro has what it takes to succeed in England and while former manager Neil Redfearn opted not to build on that promising debut, new boss Uwe Rosler may have other ideas.

While Leeds could have three experienced centre-backs at their disposal next season – if Liam Cooper, Giuseppe Bellusci and Sol Bamba all remain – there are still likely to be chances for Del Fabro to impress. And if he performs like he did against the Black Cats, Rosler could soon struggle to leave him out.

At this stage that is merely hypothetical, but few centre-backs impress at such a young age and those who do often show that once they are given a chance, they do not let it go without a fight.
