Gary Lineker reacts to Newcastle star Jonas Gutierrez’s survival-ensuring strike

Newcastle United preserved their Premier League status with a 2-0 win over West Ham United.

BBC pundit Gary Lineker took to social networking site Twitter in order to praise Jonas Gutierrez’s late strike which ensured Newcastle United’s Premier League survival.

The Magpies headed into the relegation D-Day two points clear of Hull City and knowing that victory over an out-of-form West Ham United would ensure they avoid the drop to the Championship.

It was a surreal situation for Newcastle, especially considering they entered Spring 13 points clear of the drop zone and safely in mid-table in spite of their managerial situation.

Nevertheless, a horrific run of results including nine defeats in their previous 10 matches heading into Sunday’s clash meant they were in real danger of giving up their Premier League status.

There was a naturally anxious atmosphere around St. James’ Park, but Moussa Sissoko’s opener followed by Jonas Gutierrez’s deflected second ensured Newcastle’s survival and prompted wild scenes.

It’s tough on Hull who battle bravely throughout the season, yet Steve Bruce’s side can have few complaints as an evident wastefulness in the final third was an all-too familiar tale.

As for the Geordies, Premier League survival is just the start of plenty of hard work ahead as they need to sort out their managerial situation and bring in some new blood to help strengthen the squad.
