Transfer bin: Arsenal to sign Dani Alves

Metro claim that the Gunners want the Brazilian full-back, but the likelihood of a deal happening is slight.

Metro have today insinuated that Arsenal are ready to make a raid on Barcelona this summer and want to bring Dani Alves to the Emirates Stadium.

However, this story seems like prime fodder for the transfer bin - the destination for all the countless spurious rumours and rumblings imagined up by the media.

There is no doubting Alves’ quality and continued importance to the Catalan side, and there is every likelihood that he is set to leave Camp Nou this summer due to his expiring contract.

Despite this, with plenty of suitors for the potential free agent, Arsenal look unlikely to make a move for the veteran.

Firstly, since Bacary Sagna’s departure from the North London club last summer, the Gunners are overloaded at right-back.

The emergence of Hector Bellerin to complement the signings of Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, along with Carl Jenkinson, mean that a new right-back is the last thing that Arsene Wenger’s men need.

The experienced French coach also places a priority on youth and as such seems unlikely to move for a player on the wring side of 30.

Finally, with a number of financially endowed clubs also said to be interested in Alves, the Brazilian will have significant wages that the frugal Wenger will not match.

Alves could be a star at Arsenal; too bad it will never happen.
