The defender is also keen to give the fans a positive feeling to carry into next season.
Finishing third comes with the added incentive of avoiding a Champions League play-off, dropping them straight in at the group stage, but Mertesacker says there is added motivation from the team to produce a performance for the fans after a disappointing couple of result in recent weeks.
“At times it was a difficult season for everyone,” he said.
“The support throughout was absolutely fantastic and great and gave us a lift at some stages. We are absolutely delighted with our fans and appreciate their support very much.”
Arsenal’s fine form in 2015 has seen them turn their season around after a poor start, with their impressive performances having seen them be both the Premier League’s in-from side and one of the best in Europe.
There has also been talk of a potential title challenge next year, should they start strongly, which automatic qualification for the Champions League and a strong pre-season should help them to do.
And Mertesacker says he and the rest of the squad are keen to have not only a positive feeling for the upcoming FA Cup final, but also something to offer the fans to feel optimistic about heading into the summer.
“We want to finish strong, with three points to seal third spot and to have a good feeling for the FA Cup final,” he added.
“We also want to give the fans a good feeling for next season. It would be great if we can achieve that, so we will do everything to give ourselves a good level of confidence.”
