John Carver’s side have lost nine of their last 10 league matches, and the former Newcastle striker expects them to drop all three points against the London outfit at St. James' Park.
“Just because teams need to win at this stage of the season – or still have something to play for – doesn’t mean they will though, and I was adamant that Newcastle were false favourites to win at QPR last week,” Owen wrote on Colossusbets.com. “And so it proved.
“You can’t just flick a switch and play well because you need to, and recent form tells you that Newcastle are the worst side in the league side at the moment. And by some distance, too.
“So I think if any side is going to take all three points here then it is West Ham, for all that they have only won away three times this season and are hardly finishing their campaign in blistering form either. I go 1-0 or 2-1 to West Ham, with a scoring draw covered by 1-1 and AOD.”
Newcastle lost 2-1 to Queens Park Rangers away from home at Loftus Road in London last weekend. QPR were already relegated, but still Carver’s side failed to pick up even a point.
West Ham have virtually nothing to play for, but many would back Owen’s prediction to come true.
Newcastle need a win to make sure that they remain in the Premier League next season, but even playing at home does not mean that they will be favourites to do so.
If the Magpies concede an early goal, then the players will be under pressure. Hull City are two points behind them, but if they win against Manchester United at the KC Stadium and Newcastle lose, then the Tigers will escape the drop to the Championship.
