Liverpool hero Kenny Dalglish's Team of the Year includes only one from Arsenal

Kenny Dalglish Watches On

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has named his Team of the Year.

Writing in his weekly blog for the Mirror, Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has posted his end of season awards, including a rather controversial selection for the Team of the Year.

While Chelsea make up the bulk of the selection with five players, the Anfield idol opted to turn to his former club by naming as many as three Liverpool stars in his XI, and just one from Arsenal.

Here is his XI in what appears to be a 4-3-3 formation:

David De Gea, Hector Bellerin, Martin Skrtel, John Terry, Cesar Azpilicueta, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho, Nemanja Matic, Willian, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero.

While a number of names in that XI cannot be questioned, the introduction of Raheem Sterling over Chilean international Alexis Sanchez is somewhat baffling given their performances this season.

Alexis Sánchez 16 8 3.41 2.26 3.38 32.24 5.35 34
Raheem Sterling 7 7 2.4 2.14 2.94 26.26 4.69 35

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the Gunners’ summer signing from Barcelona has outshone the England international in all seven key attacking categories.

Aside from his 16 goals and eight assists, Sanchez averages more shots, key passes, take-ons, accurate passes and ball recoveries per Premier League fixture than the Reds ace.

Philippe Coutinho’s form in the second half of the campaign has been admirable, but in contrast Sterling has often appeared laboured as speculation over his future mounts.

The 20-year-old and his agent are at loggerheads with the club, with the BBC reporting on Friday that the attacker has no intention of signing a new deal even if offered record-breaking sums.

Sanchez, on the other hand, appears right at home at the Emirates Stadium and owing to his fabulous debut season, he was rightly among the frontrunners for the prestigious PFA Player of the Year award.
