Paul Merson has called into question Fabricio Coloccini's performance against QPR last weekend.
Newcastle's season has been slowly lurching towards disaster, and they face the very real prospect of relegation this weekend.
SkySports pundit Paul Merson has questioned captain Fabricio Coloccini's commitment to the cause, citing his role in their 2-1 loss to QPR last weekend.
He believes the Argentine could have done better for one of the two goals the team conceded.
Merson said: "If you look at Fabricio Coloccini for the goal that Leroy Fer scored... he moved out of the way!
"You can’t do that. You’ve got to let it hit you in the face! Don’t you want to be playing in the Premier League next year?!"
Coloccini has only one year left on his contract, and only last month he spoke to the Newcastle Chronicle about his desire to leave and rejoin San Lorenzo.
It's likely if the club are relegated or not he will not be playing for them next year, with a shake up required and want away players like the Argentine should be top of the list.
The 33-year-old has made 31 appearances for the side this season and has already had one stint in the Championship with the club earlier in his career.
Merson does not believe it will be necessary despite his criticism of Newcastle, admitting he does not rate the team at all, but predicts they will survive in the Premier League by beating West Ham 2-1 on the final day.
