The former Tottenham Hotspur trainee has been linked with a reunion with Tim Sherwood at Villa Park in recent weeks.
Button, 26, has made 94 total appearances for Brentford since arriving from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2013 but is now a reported target for Tim Sherwood’s side following a stellar first season in the Championship [h/t Telegraph].
The former Tottenham Hotspur trainee worked with Sherwood during his time at White Hart Lane, as well as with Villa goalkeeping coaching Tony Parks, and Brentford’s failure to secure promotion could well lead to him moving on in the coming months.
Said to be earmarked as a potential replacement for the embattled Brad Guzan, the ex-England Under-20 international is remaining tight-lipped over his future for the moment but stresses that he is aiming make the step up to Premier League football at some stage.
“Obviously it's flattering and a bit of a boost to be linked with clubs like that, but I don't want to comment on that really,” said Button. “You never know what's going to happen, and playing in the top flight is something I've always aimed for, but I'm just focused on Brentford.
“There's a lot of players here who I wouldn't be surprised to see linked with Premier League clubs. There's a lot of talent, and I'm sure a lot of us will be playing at a higher level one day.”
Button is not the only keeper who has been linked with Villa in recent weeks, however, with FC Cologne’s Tim Horn and Molde’s Orjan Nyland also reported to be on the club’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window [h/t Daily Mail].
Whether one of the three would prove an upgrade over the now-benched Guzan is open for debate but it does seem like there are serious question marks over the US international’s long-term future at Villa Park.
