Two reasons shock Sterling bid makes no sense for Manchester United

United have been linked with a move for the 20-year-old Liverpool winger. But why...?

According to the Guardian (and a host of other sources), Manchester United have made an enquiry about the availability of Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling.

Now, we can all see the perks of trying to prise Sterling away from Anfield. Manchester United would infuriate Liverpool fans, create a new chapter in the rivalry between the two clubs and assert their dominance over the Reds.

But, on the pitch, the move would a foolish one.

Sterling has scored seven Premier League goals this season - that won't be enough to get United into the top four, let alone challenge for the title. Okay, off-field issues have distracted him. But they also distracted Luis Suarez in his last term at Anfield - and look what he managed?

Yes, the 20-year-old will be playing with a better quality of players... yet that'll likely mean a demotion to the bench rather than an improvement in his own form.

And there are two main reasons - on top of all this - the Liverpool winger would be a pointless move for Manchester United. Firstly, Memphis Depay is coming to Old Trafford this summer, a far more prolific player than Sterling in a similar if not identical position.

Secondly, United already have Adnan Januzaj as another young, exciting forward with potential for the future. And look what's happened to him...?
