Report: Tottenham to compete with Everton for Jonny Evans

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to let Jonny Evans leave this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton interested in signing the defender.

According to The Manchester Evening News, Tottenham Hotspur will compete with Everton for the signature of Manchester United centre-back Jonny Evans this summer.

The 27-year-old has had two difficult seasons under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal - blighted by injuries and a spitting incident at Newcastle United.

The Manchester-based newspaper claims that Evans has not been offered a new deal and United are willing to let him go with just 13 months remaining on his current contract.

Evans has fallen down the defensive pecking order at Old Trafford and with Chris Smalling already earning a new contract, the Northern Ireland international looks likely to be on the move.

United are expected to announce new deals for Ashley Young and Phil Jones in the foreseeable future, according to the newspaper.

Defenders such as Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett from United's academy have come in and got the nod repeatedly over Evans, who has been reduced to just 14 starts this season.

According to The Daily Mail, Everton boss Roberto Martinez is on the lookout for an experienced defender with Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz due to leave in the summer. Evans could certainly fit that role despite not being the pedigree expected as a United centre-back.

Everton captain, Phil Jagielka, is 32-years-old now and cannot be over-relied on as he slowly but surely comes to the end of his career.

Of course, a move to Goodison Park means Evans would not have to uproot his family whereas White Heart Lane, based in London, has the possibility of being an inconvenience with his wife Hayley Evans working for MUTV.
