Crystal Palace take non-league keeper Grant Smith on trial

Selhurst Park - Crystal Palace - 23/02/2014

HITC Sport understands Crystal Palace have taken former Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Grant Smith on trial.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club that Crystal Palace are weighing up a move for former Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Grant Smith after taking him on trial .

The 21-year-old has been training with Palace for the last few weeks after catching the eye playing for Hayes & Yeading in the Conference South.

Smith joined Hayes & Yeading last summer after leaving Brighton and dislodged England C international Calum Kitscha to become No.1 keeper at York Road.

The athletic shot-stopper has kept seven clean sheets in 21 games for Hayes & Yeading and his performances have not gone unnoticed higher up the football pyramid, with a number of Football League clubs keeping tabs on his progress.

However, Palace have stolen a march in the race to sign Smith by taking him on trial at Selhurst Park so that they can cast an eye over him at close quarters.

Smith is thought to have impressed during his stint at Palace, with academy head goalkeeper coach Gary Phillips giving rave reviews to the club's hierarchy over Smith's potential.

Palace have shown they are willing to look down the leagues for new signings having brought in Keshi Anderson from non-League Barton Rovers during the January transfer window - and the forward is now on the fringes of Alan Pardew's first-team.
