Graham Roberts sends Defoe a message on behalf of 'all at Spurs'

The former Tottenham Hotspur man congratulated the Sunderland striker after he helped his side stave off relegation on Wednesday night.

Ex-Tottenham star Graham Roberts took to Twitter to congratulate Sunderland forward Jermain Defoe on Wednesday night, sending him a message of warmth 'on behalf of all at Spurs.'

Defoe, of course, was a striker at the north London side, scoring goals galore during his time at White Hart Lane.

The 32-year-old may have scored less for Sunderland so far during his time at the Stadium of Light - but his contribution has still been vital to the Black Cats' cause.

His goals have been important ones - especially Defoe's winner against Newcastle United in the Tyne-Wear derby.

And, against Arsenal on Monday night, the striker was pitching in left, right and centre to help Sunderland defend their way to an admirable clean sheet in north London: one that ensured their Premier League safety.

Roberts was impressed and 'very pleased' for the forward, congratulating the former Tottenham man on social media.

Defoe may have cost Sunderland a rather sizeable amount in terms of wages but it was a risk they thought was worth taking. Just like they did with the appointment of Dick Advocaat.

And, as a former Spurs man, the 32-year-old would no doubt have enjoyed the added bonus of frustrating Arsenal at the Emirates!
