So the unthinkable has been suggested: Raheem Sterling to Manchester United.
According to the Guardian (along with a number of other national newspapers), United have made an enquiry for the 20-year-old Liverpool star. Depending on the source, various permutations have been reported - although many say the Anfield outfit have rejected/dismissed any interest.
What an intriguing scenario that poses, though, for both clubs, leading to an endless number of questions. Do Manchester United need Sterling? Would Liverpool ever let the young winger move to Old Trafford? Would they have any power to stop him?
Former Manchester United man Lou Macari reacted as many did on Twitter on Wednesday night: with scepticism.
Why do the press do this to football fans,Sterling for @ManUtd— Lou Macari (@LouMacari10) May 20, 2015
And Macari makes a valid point. This could all simply be done to sell newspapers. But what if United really have enquired for the 20-year-old?
Are they simply doing it to get one over the Reds or does Louis van Gaal see something big in Sterling's potential?
Needless to say, Liverpool fans have mostly reacted negatively to the reports on social media. There has been scepticism (similar to Macari), there has been derisory laughter... and there has been fury. Here's a selection of the Twitter reaction:
Man Utd have put in an inquiry for Raheem Sterling tonight. Surely they're doing it to try humiliate us #LFC— RushTheKop (@RushTheKop) May 20, 2015
Seriously now. If we even allow negotiations to take place between Raheem and them, i want everyone related out of my club— Alexey Yaroshevsky (@YaroLFC) May 20, 2015
