Arsenal fought hard but weren’t able to get the better of Sunderland last night as the teams shared a 0-0 draw, which secured safety for the visitors to the Emirates Stadium.
Arsene Wenger took the opportunity to start midfielder Jack Wilshere, who was later subbed off, as he continued his progress coming back from an ankle injury, which has caused him to miss a lot of football this year.
Wenger can’t be blamed for making the decision because he’ll already have one eye on the FA Cup final against Aston Villa after the end of the season and he’ll want to have a fit midfield ready to fight in the game.
Wilshere looked busy on his first start after the ankle problem, but Arsenal in general seemed to have a problem breaking down a very stubborn side, with Sunderland looking like a side that were fighting to stay in the top flight.
Wilshere’s passing looked positive and he probed as Arsenal searched for a way through Sunderland’s defence, but that killer final ball and the deadly chance never seemed to present itself for the home side.
Wilshere will definitely have aspirations to play in the cup final at Wembley and he needs to prove why he is a better option for Wenger than some of his teammates in the same position.
Central midfield is one of the strongest areas of Arsenal’s team and any player who doesn’t adhere to the standards which have been set in that area of the team is going to struggle to get some game time.
Arsenal take on West Brom this weekend in their final game of the league season, which will give Wilshere one last chance to prove he should be starting against Villa next weekend.
Here’s what Arsenal fans had to say about Wilshere’s performance on Twitter.
No penetration since Wilshere came off. Typical Wengerball performance today, possession without purpose.— ZP™ (@ZPravi) May 20, 2015
