Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been quoted by Goal.com predicting how Francis Coquelin would react if he signed an expensive holding midfielder.
Coquelin currently holds the starting position in front of Arsenal’s back four and his manager feels that he would fight tooth and nail to preserve that position if the club signed a high profile player over the summer.
“I think nobody would dispute that his performances have been convincing and that he is ready for a fight even if somebody comes in,” he said.
“Even if somebody comes in, he will stay here. I extended his contract, that means I believe in him - what is for sure is that he has shown he has the capacity to play for us and play a big part in the success of the team.”
Arsenal remain linked with Southampton star Morgan Schneiderlin as a possible summer arrival, with Goal claiming that the Frenchman would set the club back a fee in the region of £25 million.
He’s certainly the sort of player Arsenal will be looking at in the summer transfer market, but whether he can dislodge Coquelin is debatable.
His progress at Arsenal since returning to the club from a loan spell with Charlton in the Championship has been remarkable.
He’s great to watch because he’s aggressive and not afraid to get stuck in and deserves credit for focusing on his strengths rather than getting pre-occupied with developing his game to have more of an impact when Arsenal go forward.
Hopefully his attitude will rub off on his teammates and anyone Wenger signs in the transfer market should be met with fierce competition by the players already in the Arsenal ranks.
