Tottenham may be wise to move for Victor Wanyama rather than Morgan Schneiderlin

Taking a look at an alternative Southampton player who could be a good fit at Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a recent report from, Tottenham Hotspur will have to pay £25million to sign Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton this summer.

When you consider the Frenchman’s ability and potential importance to Spurs’ side, it would seem like money very well spent; but there is an alternative Saints player Tottenham could move for instead of the 25-year-old.

Victor Wanyama is two years younger than Schneiderlin and has a contract that runs out at the same time as his teammate – the summer of 2017.

As a result, Southampton will be in no rush to sell either player, but Tottenham could potentially save themselves some money by moving for the Kenyan instead.

Having signed from Celtic for £12.5million back in 2013, he would not come cheap, but he is likely to cost closer to the £20million mark, meaning Tottenham could potentially save at least £5million by moving for the younger player.

When you consider which of the two players Southampton would be more inclined to sell, it is likely to be Wanyama, given Schneiderlin’s talent and undeniable importance to the side.

Of course Saints manager Ronald Koeman will want to keep both, but it is interesting that as Tottenham seek a quality defensive midfielder Wanyama has not been spoken of as a potential target.

Last summer, the Daily Mail reported that Wanyama was keen to join Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane, so what chance his former manager saving a few pennies and moving for him ahead of his illustrious teammate?
