According to BBC Sport, Sterling will inform Liverpool in a meeting on Friday that he will not sign a new contract, and that he wants to leave in the summer transfer window.
“I went through the same thing,” the 37-year-old told Sky Sports. “When I was young I had a problem with Real Madrid and Monaco because some guys that were around me were putting stuff in my head.
“I lost my football, mentally I wasn't there anymore, I wasn't concentrating on anything, and therefore it looked like I was going to have a good career and people were questioning me when I hadn't even started my career. So it's the same thing with Raheem Sterling.”
Sterling has not been in great form this season, although he has not been exactly bad either.
In 35 Premier League appearances this season, the England international has scored seven goals and created 75 chances, while having a pass accuracy of 81% and a shot accuracy of 53%.
Last season, the 20-year-old scored nine goals and created 51 chances in 33 league games, while having a pass accuracy of 82% and a pass accuracy of 67.
Statistically, Sterling has been better this campaign, but he has not always stepped up in the big matches.
Perhaps the Liverpool winger has been affected by speculation on his future, but it cannot be denied that he is a very promising young player.
Next season is probably going to be better for Sterling. Once the youngster sorts out his future in the summer, he can concentrate just on his football.
