Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has explained to the Northern Echo what he thinks will be the mentality of the club’s current players ahead of the massive game against West Ham.
The club’s former striker and manager says there will be negative feelings in the dressing room, which are similar to the last time the club was relegated into the Championship.
“I’m sure they will all be feeling like I did a few years ago. The guys won’t be able to sleep much; they won’t be able to enjoy it,” he said.
“It’s just a matter of hoping and praying they can give you one last performance. It is going to be difficult because they have not put in any performances for such a long time. You can’t just magic them out of thin air.”
Shearer is as passionate as the next Newcastle fan and it will be in the back of the minds of the players, what could happen in terms of unrest if the Hammers register a win and the Magpies are relegated.
Newcastle fans just want to see their side give everything in such an important match and regardless of whether the club stays up, there are going to be some big questions which need answering in the summer.
The club’s manager John Carver needs to make sure that the players are in the right frame of mind and haven’t been physically affected by the stress of the situation in the build up to the match.
If everyone who features in that Newcastle side is in a good frame of mind, fresh and determined, the club will give themselves every chance of staying above the bottom three.
