Robin van Persie is emerging as a top transfer target for AS Roma, and Kevin Strootman said to be playing a role in making it happen.
Italian website Tuttomercatoweb report Strootman has made contact with the striker, ahead of the transfer window.
Strootman has himself been touted as a focal transfer target for Manchester United, even last month by The Mirror, but their interest has cooled after injuries restricted him to only four Serie A games this season.
He has not played since January and with Roma driving a high price, United would be sensible to hold back considering how Radamel Falcao has struggled since his cruciate knee ligament injury, the same as Strootman suffered.
He still may get a chance to play alongside Van Persie, if Roma can make a tempting offer for United to sell the striker.
Van Persie has just one year remaining on his current deal, and has fallen out of favour this season, even behind the under-performing Falcao.
United would surely prefer to sell him abroad, and doing a deal with Roma may yet one day smooth relations for a deal to sign Strootman in future seasons if he recovers his form.
Van Persie's intentions are unclear, but the chance to play alongside his Dutch international colleague in a top league he is yet to discover has to be a consideration for him.
