Report: Sherwood identifies Charlie Austin as potential Aston Villa signing

Tim Sherwood Press Conference Smiling 12/02/2014

Tim Sherwood as reportedly eyed up a move to bring QPR striker Charlie Austin to Aston Villa.

According to the Daily Star, Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood has identified QPR striker Charlie Austin as the man he wants to sign should Christian Benteke leave the club.

Villa head into Sunday's final game of the season against Burnley having already secured their Premier League survival, with manager Sherwood fulfilling the expectation placed upon him when he took the job in February - to keep Villa in the top flight.

Now, with Sherwood no doubt eager to prevent another relegation battle next season, new signings will be needed - and it's QPR ace Austin being linked with the club.

Austin, 25, was one of the few bright spots in QPR's season as they suffered immediate relegation back to the Championship, scoring 17 goals in 34 games and even being touted as an England international after his goalscoring record.

His rise from non-league football to the Premier League has taken just six years, and his exploits in the top flight will now attract interest in the summer transfer window.

With just one year left on his contract at Loftus Road, the R's are vulnerable to losing their leading goalscorer, with the Daily Star reporting that Sherwood wants to sign him for Villa as he believes Austin is the proven goalscorer Villa will need - but only if Christian Benteke leaves the club.

The Belgian has hit 12 goals in just 14 games under Sherwood, and will surely attract interest from bigger clubs as we draw ever closer to the summer transfer window.

Should Benteke depart Villa Park, then Sherwood may look to reinvest any transfer fee in Austin, who scored against Sherwood's Villa in the 3-3 draw back in April - and based on this season's performances, Austin may be a worthy replacement.
