The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been used sparingly by Mauricio Pochettino of late.

Mousa Dembele staked his claim for a starting place in Tottenham's last Premier League game of the season in training on Wednesday afternoon by upstaging Harry Kane.

The Belgian has been used sparingly of late by boss Mauricio Pochettino - although his recent substitute appearances are a marked improvement on being completely left out of the team.

Perhaps Pochettino has been slowly building up Dembele's fitness by giving him more and more minutes each week in the build up to the season finale?

The manner in which the 27-year-old was left out of the Tottenham team so suddenly earlier this term, however, suggests that might be an optimistic way of looking at things.

Just to make sure, then, Dembele looked to be building his case for a rare start in training, showing a fine turn to get away from none other than Kane.

He was also pictured laughing and sharing a joke with Nabil Bentaleb, who could be his midfield partner if the Belgian is allowed back into the Spurs side.

Ryan Mason's poor recent form would make him the perfect candidate for the drop.

The only problem is, while many Tottenham fans would love to see Dembele back in the side, Pochettino may not agree - for reasons that seem quite puzzling to most.
