Another Dutchman could be on his way to Manchester United if their current number one heads for pastures new this summer.
Cillessen currently plays for Ajax and the 26-year-old was United manager Louis van Gaal’s first-choice ’keeper for the Netherlands at last summer’s World Cup.
Doubts remain over the long-term future of De Gea, who is yet to sign a new contract at United and whose current deal expires in little over a year.
Van Gaal famously substituted Cillessen with just moments to spate in his country’s World Cup quarter-final against Costa Rica, but it proved to be a master-stroke when his replacement Tim Krul was the hero in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.
Cillessen would be a risk having spent his whole career to date in his homeland and this having no Premier League experience.
But he is considerably older than De Gea was when the Spaniard first arrived at United and with nearly 100 games under his belt for Ajax he could be a sensible option if necessary.
United fans, of course, will be hoping it does not get to that, with De Gea instead remaining for the long haul.
