John Barnes suggests Benteke would revitalise Liverpool's attack

Former Liverpool and England forward John Barnes has stressed what a good signing Aston Villa's Christian Benteke would be for the club.

Liverpool legend John Barnes told talkSPORT that he feels Christian Benteke would be a great signing for his old club.

The Belgian forward has been linked with a move to Anfield, as reported by the radio station, and Barnes feels that it would definitely be a step in the right direction, stressing the positives that he would bring to the club.

“Christian Benteke would be a great signing for Liverpool - What Liverpool have lacked is a presence up front. They have good approach play, but have been unable to get the ball in the box,” he said.

“With Benteke, as well as playing the fluent football Liverpool can, they would also have the option of being a bit more direct. I would be excited about that if he comes.”

It won’t be easy for Liverpool to do a deal because Aston Villa are unsurprisingly reportedly asking for around £30 million from any transfer.

Benteke has been one of the main reasons behind the turn in form, which has kept Villa in the Premier League and the club’s manager Tim Sherwood will most likely want him to stay, as he can be the figurehead in his attack for next season.

If Liverpool could do a deal, it would be a real statement of intent from the club at a time when there is uncertainty over how Brendan Rodgers’ squad is going to look in August.

Benteke is certainly capable of giving the Liverpool attack something different to what they already have and if he’s the man that Rodgers decides he wants to bring in, it’s important the club backs him.
