Rangers are aiming to return to the Scottish Premiership via the playoffs.

Former Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson has explained to Sky Sports why Rangers should be welcomed back to the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers are currently in the Scottish Championship and are aiming to get promoted to the top flight via the playoffs.

“Personally I would,” Thompson told Sky Sports if he would like to see Rangers back in the Scottish top flight.

“It is fantastic for Scottish football, Old Firm games. You are guaranteed four a season if they finish in the top six, maybe Cup games as well. For me it’s essential.”

Celtic and Rangers are the two biggest clubs in Scotland, and them playing each other on a regular basis once again will be massive for Scottish football.

At this moment in time, the Gers have the weaker team, and even next season - if they get promoted - they may not be able to compete with the Bhoys for the league title.

However, the Scottish Premiership needs Rangers for its growth and also to attract viewers. The Glasgow giants last featured in the top flight in the 2011-12 season, and their potential return next campaign should be welcomed by one and all.

The Old Firm derby is one of the biggest games in the world, and the return to the Premiership of Rangers will mean that one will get to see more of them.
